The Sustainer of All

I love playing the piano; it ranks as the top thing to do in my leisure time and worship time. I am fascinated by the acoustics and musical science behind how it works. However, last week the sustain pedal on my piano broke. In case you are unfamiliar with the piano, the sustain pedal is used to hold notes out while playing other notes; it releases the hammer, allowing the strings to vibrate freely, creating a smooth, connected, legato sound. Finally, I have it fixed, and it is back to making those smooth and free acoustics it is familiar with playing.

This made me think about how God holds and supports us. His grace allows us to “vibrate freely” in His love. God is the sustainer of all things. He says in Isaiah 46:4,

“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.”

This verse brings me an incredible feeling of peace. Life is busy and the burdens are heavy, but we don’t have to be weighed down, for He carries us. Just as a sustain pedal connects individual notes into a beautiful melody, God connects each moment of our lives into a grace-filled completion.

“My hand will sustain him; surely my arm will strengthen him.” Psalm 89:21 NIV

In God’s presence, our strength is renewed. All of us have a physical limit that our bodies cannot function beyond. It is important that we provide ourselves with the proper amount of sleep, nourishment, and care. But above that, it is God (who has no limits) who sustains us. Therefore, it is crucial to spend daily devotion with Him or we will hit our limit.

“Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35 NIV

Have you ever experienced the God-breathed energy of God? Jesus says He is the bread of life. Both in Jesus’ day and today bread is served at nearly every meal. This makes me think that God wants us to spend time with and depend on Him on a daily basis. In God’s presence, we will be filled with energy- God-breathed energy. God-given energy prepares and sustains us to do His will and His will alone.

To conclude, here is the practical advice I challenge you to apply to your daily life: immerse yourself in God’s presence each morning, asking God for the energy you need to accomplish His will for your life that day. Rely on His strength throughout your day. Then, each night, enjoy the peace of knowing that the God of the universe is sustaining you.

“but those who hope in the Lord

will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles;

they will run and not grow weary,

they will walk and not be faint.”

Isaiah 40:31 NIV

L.I.F.E. – – – Live Intently For Eternity

Life is not about living for ourselves, it is about living, earnestly, in light of what He did for us.
